Zakim Bridge Song

Songs that make you smile!
All the words

The Customs Tower falcons have a new stop on their way
Up to see Old Ironsides and Bunker Hill today
Something soaring skyward, where it meets them eye-to-eye
Boston-town has spun a web between the Earth and sky!

“Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill”
If a bridge can twist your tongue, this one surely will!
Address her with respect as you salute the old and new
But don’t forget the greeting that makes her smile at you …

Zakey take me over your awesome crossing of
Boats that travel under and cars that roll above
By the name of Lenny Zakim and the pen of Christian Menn
What a way to take ‘em across and back again!

Turning every head when she popped up on the scene
The hottest thing to hit the town since Boston baked a bean!
Who could not be dazzled as she grew so gracefully
Sprouting like a flower where the Garden used to be

A bridge apart, from the start she wore the Zakim name
But how could things so different share a spirit quite the same?
Well, Lenny built his bridges from the bonds of human hearts
Strong as bundled cables, tons of steel, and concrete parts

By day she’s got the sparkle of the river passing by
And dashing masthead monuments that touch the big blue sky
But what could match the grace that glows as nightfall tucks her in
Shining in the darkness from a light somewhere within

Zakey take me over your awesome crossing of
Boats that travel under and cars that roll above
By the name of Lenny Zakim and the pen of Christian Menn
What a way to take ‘em across and back again!

Holding out her welcome, straight and strong for all to cross
Steady in whatever storm Earth or wind may toss
Every beam and cable cast in style to play its part
A symphony of brawn and beauty, written sleek and smart

Downtown to Charlestown, majestic sails unfurled
Catching winds of freedom here like nowhere in the world
From the storms of hillside battle where rebellion bravely stood
To Lenny’s friendly whirlwind rolling through the neighborhood

But where are all the hands and feet that clamored here before
Leaving us this masterpiece standing shore-to-shore?
Who that walk among us strung these vast and mighty threads
From towers north and south like two big Y’s turned on their heads?

Cars below so busy, spars above so trim and sharp
Boston breezes play her lofty rigging like a harp
A ten-lane load of cargo streaming fair along the rails
The Schooner of the Charles under gallant cabled sails!

Zakey take me over your awesome crossing of
Boats that travel under and cars that roll above
By the name of Lenny Zakim and the pen of Christian Menn
What a way to take ‘em across and back again!
